Some things never change no matter where you are in.  Note the bullet holes in the "No Target Shooting" sign.

Wet, slippery roads and morning cold made raingear and layered clothing the order of the day.
 

Typical gas station and restaurant.  None of the rural gas stations have paved driveways.

Hot chocolate and rhubarb pie made even the crabby waitress more palatable.

At the end of Alaska Highway 1, at the very tip end of the Kenai Peninsula,
is the end of the road.
The Land's End Restaurant marks the spot.

Cold and wet, Woody celebrates the third corner.

The Homer Spit is a small strip of land extending out into Kachemak Bay from Homer.  It's known as the little drinking village with a fishing problem. 

Fisherman use the Homer Spit as a base for halibut fishing.



 

Camping out along the shore is free on a first come, first served basis.  Some people even camp out in tents.  Camping in a tent must be miserable in these cold, wet condition.
 

We saw an old pickup truck from Sarasota, Florida, with a homemade camper on the bed.  The truck was so loaded that the bed was almost dragging the ground. 

The elderly couple was having a tire replaced at a gas station where we stopped.  I asked them about the heavy weight on the truck and they said they'd had a great time catching halibut and were taking them all back home in the camper. 

I can't imagine how they are going to drive 5,000 miles home over bumpy Alaska and Canada roads with an overloaded pickup camper full of halibut!  I'll bet there were many more tire stops along the way!

A relatively new addition to the Spit is this full service RV Park.  Nothing but electrical and water hookups on a gravel surface, but better than camping out in a tent.
