Mackinac Island

We couldn't  leave Michigan without touring historic Mackinac Island, site of a British fort during the American Revolution.

Of further historic significance...this is where Randy and Gaye went on their honeymoon!!!

The island is a 20-minute ferry ride away from Mackinaw City.   Horse-drawn carriages and bicycles are the only modes of transportation on the island since automobiles are banned.  The downtown is filled with quaint gift and FUDGE shops!!!  The Governor's Mansion is perched on the hill.

Lilac trees were in full bloom as we took a carriage tour of the island, visiting the fort, cemeteries, forests of white cedar, spruce and pines, and the Grand Hotel.

Arch Rock was really spectacular!  Rising 146 feet above the water and spanning 50 feet, the arch was formed by wind and water erosion over thousand of years or, according to an Indian legend, the tears of an Indian maiden who was forbidden to marry the son of a sky spirit.
