Sturgis
to
Green Bay

Reluctantly leaving Sturgis, we circled by Mount Rushmore and through Custer State Park before heading toward the Badlands.

Mount Rushmore had just received a face-washing.
A crew of volunteers washed the granite faces, removing decades of dirt, grime and lichens.

Bikers lined the road to Mount Rushmore.

The couple above provided inspiration to us all.
Oh to be riding my bike to Sturgis when I'm their age!

Two tunnels on State Road 16A (Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway) through the Norbeck Wildlife Preserve frame the Presidents on Mount Rushmore.

The Peter Norbeck Scenic Highway is a twisting two lane road with a couple of pigtails and a number of 180 hairpin curves.  It is a great ride through the preserve.

Roe found a friend!

The wild burros in the Preserve expect handouts as a toll charge.
This one moved on when he found out that Roe came empty-handed.

Leaving Custer State Park, we headed out State Road 40 for the Badlands.
Unfortunately, we should have headed out State Road 44.  The "short" 40-mile detour took us by the south end of the Badlands, but cost us a couple hours of daylight as we retraced out route.

Woody must have had the map upside down again!

The Badlands are an incredible sight.
We'll have to save exploring for a future trip.
