Whitehorse
to
Fort Nelson

More scenes along the Alaska Highway between Whitehorse and Fort Nelson.

A seemingly endless Alaska Highway winds into the mountains.

This is a good section of highway, but paved with a rough gravel surface.

The Alaska Highway is 1,422 miles long.
To put the mileage in perspective, the Alaska Highway is almost exactly the same distance as from Boston to Miami.  Or from Orlando to Omaha.  Only the Alaska Highway is a two lane road, has frost heaves, loose gravel patches, long muddy construction zones, 50-100 miles between gas stops, and bears.  All in all, it's a pretty good road for most of its distance.

If you feel comfortable riding five miles on muddy, rutted, graveled road you can ride the Alaska Highway.  Let me rephrase that:  If you CAN RIDE five miles on muddy.... ; nobody feels comfortable riding muddy roads except maybe on a dirt bike.

It is 950 miles from the Harley dealer in Grande Prairie to the dealer in Whitehorse.  It is 600 miles from the Harley dealer in Whitehorse to the Harley dealer in Fairbanks.  Neither of them carry a complete inventory of parts, so if you break something critical be prepared for a stay.  FedEx overnight is a foreign term.  FedEx next week is more likely.

The country is beautiful but remote and unpopulated.  Distances between services are long.  When you leave the small towns of Fort Nelson, Watson Lake, Whitehorse, and Tok there are no services except for the occasional gas station/food store.  The Alaska Milepost may list a gas station, but when you arrive it may be closed.  Many of the stations use generators for their only source of electrical power.  You see very, very few homes alongside the road.  Cell phones do not have service except near larger towns.

We filled up with gas every time we saw a station if we had traveled near 100 miles since the last fill-up and never worried about running out of fuel.  We filled both bikes from the same pump so the station only had to run one charge.  Most stations accept charge cards, but not all.  All accept U.S. currency, but the exchange rate may be less than the official rate.  Gas averaged around $4.00 a gallon in U.S. dollars.

Muncho Lake.
We saw a lot of wildlife while passing through Muncho Lake Provincial Park.

Such a peaceful scene.  Little did we realize that minutes later Roe's bike would stop running, threatening to leave us stranded 90 miles from Fort Nelson in Muncho Provincial Park with the wildlife!

This young reindeer crossed the road in front of us.  We stopped and snapped this picture.  As we started off, he ran alongside Roe for a distance, then dropped back and ran alongside me.  For all the world, he looked as if he was playing with us as he raced us for about a quarter mile before reversing course and heading back into the forest.

This young reindeer was licking salt off the highway as I slowed to a stop and started shooting pictures.  She reluctantly walked off the highway as I stopped and posed next to me as I took this picture.
