Guy Ride 2000

Wednesday

Boone - Banner Elk - Cranberry - Asheville - Canton - Brevard

Leaving Boone we headed west on US-321 and turned south on SR-194.  This two-lane country road wound through mountains and farmland south to Banner Elk and Cranberry.  We entered the Blue Ridge Parkway and sped south to Asheville before stopping at the Moose Cafe for lunch.  After lunch we continued west on I-40 to Canton and turned south on SR-215.  About 20 miles south of Canton SR-215 had been repaved and covered with gravel.  We traveled about 10 miles at slow speed until we once again came to the Blue Ridge Parkway.  Leaving the gravel-covered SR-215, we took the Blue Ridge east to US-276 then headed south to spend the night at Brevard.

The pictures below do not do justice to the beautiful mountain vistas along the Blue Ridge Parkway.

The mountains are in full spring beauty.  The trees are so green that the distant mountains look as if they are carpeted.  The clouds literally brush the tops of the mountains.  The air is crisp and clean.  The blue haze which hangs over the mountains gave rise to the name "Smoky Mountains".
